I just completed my first creator owned graphic novel entitled,"Legend of the Black Starr." This story takes place in the late 1930’s; it’s a blend of sci-fi, horror and super hero genres. The inspiration for this project comes from my desire to see comic book characters that show people of color in a respectable fashion. During the 1930’s comic book heroes burst onto the scene but there were no heroic or seriously depicted people of color. Only stereotyped characters that degrade and made a mockery of my people were publicly shown. This project is my attempt to create an additional chapter in comic book history to include a face that looks like mine.
In addition to this project he is also working on two fantastic new portrait series. The first is a collection of famous and unsung heroes in African American history entitled, "My People, My Story". The second collection is an assembly of some of Hip Hop's greatest Emcees, DJ's and Singers. In this sensational series Rodney does a masterful job capturing the likenesses, attitude and energy of these, "Legends of Hip Hop".
